The Big Week: College Football Week 7 Advanced Stats Preview
Previewing one of the best slates of the year!
Hello all! If you missed the note I put out on Wednesday, I have been dealing with a sick pet recovering and being in the path of a hurricane for the past week and a half. As a result, I wasn’t really able to watch as much college football this past weekend as I would have wanted in order to give a good recap. So just for this week, I will be looking ahead to the upcoming slate of games. Apologies all, I am excited to get back to the same format next week!
Before the season started, this was the week we all circled on our calendars. Has the hype of some games shifted since the start of the year? Absolutely. But for the most part, we have some marquee games ahead of us this weekend:
Lets do some previewing!
During the season if you would like to see an advanced box score of a certain game, simply email (CFBNumbers@gmail.com) or DM on Twitter (@CFBNumbers) and I will happily provide you any number related thing you desire.
Week 7 Implied Points
Here are the implied points via betting lines for the weekend. Currently, the sportsbooks have Ohio State beating Oregon narrowly by a score of 28.75 to 25.75. The sportsbooks do not see the Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma as competitive, and of course you can tell who plays Mississippi State this week. Another way you can read this graph is the top left quadrant = probably not going to be fun on the eyes offensively. The bottom right quadrant on the other hand? Get that touchdown dance ready.
Week 7 QB Matchups
No surprises that an awesome slate like this week comes with a bunch of interesting QB matchups. At the top is Garrett Nussmeier vs. Jaxson Dart, two highly efficient QBs looking to continue to boost their future draft stock. Dillon Gabriel and Will Howard come up in 2nd place in this table, but the matchup im interested in is Shedeur Sanders and Avery Johnson. One QB who gets it done entirely through the air, one QB that prefers to take off and run for first down after first down.
Week 7 Mismatches
The Army offense has been one of the most efficient offenses in the FBS, particularly in their patented option running game. This week, they get UAB, who has struggled heavily to stop the run. This could get ugly real quick. Oklahoma’s passing offense has really struggled, which resulted in Jackson Arnold getting benched for Michael Hawkins Jr. In a game in which they will likely need to pass the ball to stay in the game, this is not what you want to see if you’re a Sooners fan.
Consensus Power Ratings Heading Into This Week
After missing last week, here is the latest run on the consensus power ratings. Ohio State is currently in the lead position, but as we have seen this year its basically just been Ohio State/Georgia/Alabama/Texas and then everyone else. Even though Ole Miss has a loss on the schedule, wins against LSU, Oklahoma and Georgia would most certainly vault them into that top echelon tier.
Personally after the week and a half we went through, I can’t wait to get back to normal newsletters next week. Apologies for the little hiccup everyone!
