The Upsets Week: CFB Week 13 Advanced Stats Recap + Week 14 Look Ahead
The end of the regular season has come for us folks
Chaos in the 2nd to last week! In the first year of the expanded College Football Playoff, a string of upsets just tossed the at large portion of the bracket up in the air. Just when college football was ready to hang up its cleats for the year, it delivers some quality end of year drama. For the final time this year (at least the look ahead part), let’s recap and look ahead!
During the season if you would like to see an advanced box score of a certain game, simply email (CFBNumbers@gmail.com) or DM on Twitter (@CFBNumbers) and I will happily provide you any number related thing you desire.
Most Exciting Games Of Week 13
14 seconds left, Illinois trails Rutgers 30 to 31. The Fighting Illini face a 4th and 13 and are about out of options.
WELL THATS NOT GUNNA STOP LUKE ALTMEYER! In a play that added 82.6% win probability, they were able to slice through the Rutgers secondary and steal a victory away from the Scarlet Knights. This is what it looked like on the win probability chart over on GameonPaper.com
Expectations vs. Reality
Here are the points for and against over sports books betting line expectations. The biggest winners of the week include UAB, who were a 7 point underdog and beat Rice 40-14, and Michigan putting up 50 against Northwestern.
QB Play: Power 5
Here are the Power 5 QBs of the week. Its interesting we have just a little wall of QBs in the top right spot, but nobody particularly standing out. Aaron Philo and Luke Kromenhoek are a pair of freshman QBs with some bright futures in this sport.
QB Play: Group of 5
Here are the Group of 5 QBs of the week. Bryson Barnes leads the way , with Christian Veilleux and Braylon Braxton as the next man up. If you’re wondering why Keyone Jenkins has such a high PFF grade but a low ESPN QBR, he had 4 big time throws but the 4 sacks and 1 INT against one of the worst opponents in the FBS will tank your QBR.
Stat of the Week: Big Time Upsets!
There was no better time for a bunch of upsets than the 2nd to last week of the year in the first year of the 12 team college football playoff. Ole Miss, Alabama and Texas A&M were looking to either sure up at least an at large spot in the playoff, or get as close as you possibly can. Welp, Ole Miss losses to DJ Lagway and a Florida team playing inspired in a tough final stretch of the year, Alabama gets smoked by an Oklahoma team that really hasn’t found much to hang its hat on, and Colorado allows Devin Neal to run for 207 rushing yards against them. What a perfect time for chaos!
Week 14 Implied Points
Here are the implied points for the final regular season week. Not often do we see Ohio State Michigan with a three TD spread, but that is the case this year with Ohio State favored by 21 points over arch rival Michigan. In this year’s installment of the Palmetto series, Clemson opens up as a 2.5 point favorite against South Carolina.
Week 14 QB Matchups
It remains to be seen whether Haynes King will be able to go in their rivalry game against Georgia, but if he can’t freshman Aaron Philo has shown some big promise in his absence. Since week 9 Philo has 12 PFF Big time throws to only 1 turnover worthy play. Other QB matchups of the week include Cam Ward going up against the FBS passing yards leader Kyle McCord, and either Quinn Ewers or Arch Manning against Marcel Reed in a battle for a chance to go to the SEC Championship.
Week 14 Mismatches
Kurtis Rourke and the Indiana passing attack lead off our final mismatches of the year. Everyone has been picking on the Purdue defense, and this week its the Hoosiers turn. Jaxson Dart and Ole Miss should be able to bounce back after the crippling loss to Florida, while Ashton Jeanty should have a great chance to end the season on a high note and put one more incredible performance in the minds of heisman voters.
Lily Donation Fund
The other week turned our lives upside down for a moment as our little cat was sick. After some extensive care and a really rough surgery, she has been recovering well and back to being our tubby little girl.
I hate that I have to do this but this whole ordeal was rough financially for us. If you enjoy the articles and wish to help (which you 10000% do not have to if you do not want to) I left the link to the GoFundMe up above.
